Problem Setup

  • How fast do you walk?
  • How fast does a car or a light beam travel?
  • How long would it take to get to the moon using your feet, a car, or light beam?

The answers to these questions can be solved with an equation for calculating speed. To find the speed of a moving object, you must know two things about the object:

  • the distance it traveled
  • the length of time it took to travel that distance

The distance is then divided by the time. Another way to look at it is with the formula:

speed =
      distance/time

You will be using this formula to calculate the winners in a snowmobile race.
